HMS Victory

Breaking the Line

In this painting, the HMS Victory, under the command of Admiral Nelson, is depicted breaking the battle line of the French & Spanish combined fleet at the onset of the Battle of Trafalgar. In the distance Vice Admiral Collingwood, leading the second column aboard the Royal Sovereign, is already engaged in exchanging fire in the second breach. Ships of the Combined Fleet to the north of the breaches are forced to sail on, unable to defend their own or attack the British in a wind too weak for turning about. The result is utter havoc within the Combined Fleet, and an historic victory for the British.
