Spartan
Prince and Kronprinz Wilhelm in New York Harbor, 1901-1904
The
Kronprinz Wilhelm was an express liner of the North German Lloyd Line,
which ran between New York and Bremen from 1901 to 1714. The Spartan
Prince was a smaller immigrant ship of the British Prince Line, which
ran between New York and the Mediterranean port from 1897 to 1908.
In this
painting, the two ships are depicted passing in New York Harbor during
the period between 1901 and 1904. An early morning wind from the southeast
pushes the smoke from Kronprinz Wilhelm’s funnels ahead of her
as she steams into harbor. The Spartan Prince, her bow alight from
the morning sun, heads outbound towards the Atlantic. |
