This painting portrays two Hamilton-class Endurance Coast Guard Cutters. On July 5th, 1966, the keel was laid for USCG Mellon. Commissioned on January 9th, 1968, it was third in its class. On December 12th, 1966, the keel was laid for USCG Boutwell. Commissioned on June 24th, 1968, it was fifth in its class. Both were built in Avondale, Louisiana.
In this painting, USCG Mellon is portrayed to the left firing the harpoon anti-missile and the recovery of the HH-65 Dauphin helicopter. USCG Boutwell, to the right, is portrayed firing a warning shot with her five-inch gun just forward of the bow of the motor vessel Encounter Bay during the seizure of the vessel. in June of 1988.
